Propaganda at its Best

Interesting fact of the day- in China, you refer to the cardinal directions in the following order:
East - South - West – North

So is this just another piece of propaganda to fit with the whole “East is Red” mentality, or is the practice of starting with North, as commonly quoted in the United States, a little bit of our own North American propaganda?
